ABSTRACT
A popular saying mentions that "Saved trees save us". Mahatma Gandhi said that nature is for providing things for everyone's needs and not for anybody's greed". Environmental protection has multi-dimensional as it touches the aspects of gender justice, migration of agricultural labor force, public policy of the government, and sustainable development. It is a commonplace phenomenon to observe and to be taken aback the deliberate over exploitation of existing resources. The wastage of resources starts from individual level and extended to a mass level. In this backdrop, it is the need of the hour for the general public and NGT to be proactive in protecting environment. This paper discusses in detail, the historical background of NGT and its role in protecting environment by delivering historical judgments in response to various public interest litigations. Further, this essay examines the origin and development of NGT in response to popular environmental protection movements such as Chipko movement, Narmada Bachao Movement. A moderate attempt has been made in this paper to study the dynamics of environmental justice and role of the National Green Tribunal and its work in the pursuit of sustainable development. Further, it is observed that there is a dire need of judicial legislation in pursuit of environmental protection.
